Following David and my meeting a few weeks ago with the Somerset & Avon Police and the Police Crime Commissioner – we have a long-term project to hugely improve residents reporting of driving offenses.
As you all know, the Priority One issue we were elected on was the Chew Valley’s dangerous roads. And you are all aware that to build a case to council to get more money in coming years budgets – we need reliable data. The data recorded doesn’t reflect the personal, anecdotal evidence we hear weekly from residents about near misses. However, the vast majority of people never report this. This then doesn’t inform the police in their duty of enforcement or help David and my case that we need more officer time and council money on our roads.
After our conversation with the S&A inspector, he confirmed that a near miss is a driving offense (under dangerous driving) and (I quote) “very happy” for these to be reported to their team. So, let’s do this! I would be incredibly grateful if you could distribute this through your networks and we will be having further direct communication with the residents in due course.
